Voices of erie
We proudly invite you to join us for an evening with acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning author Dr. Edda L. Fields-Black (COMBEE), celebrating the rich untapped history of Erie. Hosted by PA Humanities and Erie’s Black Wall Street, Voices of History Erie is a project dedicated to honoring and amplifying the voices of Erie’s Black community.
Join us for an evening of history, conversation, and storytelling, where shared memories and lived experiences come together to illuminate a vibrant history that, while always present, has not always been heard or acknowledged. Dr. Fields-Black will sign books immediately following the event.
Driven by passion
ABOUT THE EVENT
Voices of History Erie is part of PA Humanities’ statewide Voices of History: Stories from Black Pennsylvanians project, an effort to collect and celebrate the stories, family histories, struggles, and triumphs of Black Pennsylvanians in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Join us for an evening celebrating Voices of History, a community-driven project that amplifies the oral histories of Black Pennsylvanians. This special event marks the culmination of a journey that began at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center in Pittsburgh, where we launched the initiative by hosting Isabel Wilkerson, renowned author and historian, who discussed the vital importance of preserving these stories for present and future generations. The project has traveled to Scranton, PA, and is now completed in Erie.
Through partnerships with Erie’s Black Wall Street and the heartfelt participation of community members, we’ve transformed powerful oral histories into short films that honor the resilience, culture, and contributions of Erie’s Black community.
Special thank you to Erie Insurance, Erie Community Foundation, Tom Hagen, and generous supporters including the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Community and Economic Development and Department of Education
